St. John’s shuts down Duke in New York

When the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils headed to Madison Square Garden Saturday to play the unranked St. John’s Red Storm it was supposed to be an easy-peasy, in-the-bag win.

Well, apparently that should not have been so easily assumed.

Sorry all you Duke fans out there, but the worst part about this loss is that it all came down to one thing — you guys have to get your free throws together.

Yes, it was super close the majority of the game thanks to St. John’s Shamorie Ponds going off with 33 points, but when it came down to the very last second — it was the free throws that lost them the game.

I mean, with around one minute to go they made less than 50 percent from the line. They each only made one free throw of their two and Trevon Duval missed both his with 1:09 left.

Then St. John’s turned it on, knowing they just had to finish.

Which they did, with a long jumper from Ponds being the final hoorah before the back-and-forth free throw rumble.

Final score: St. John’s win — 81-77.

I guess momma told St. John’s to knock Duke out, and you always listen to momma. Not to mention, this win over the Blue Devils snapped an 11-game losing streak the Red Storm was on.

That said — sorry, Duke.

I know Coach K is going to have you guys playing knockout for the next few practices.
